چکیده

INTRODUCTION Glaucoma is the second leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide with neural damage starting within the lamina cribrosa of the optic nerve head (ONH). It is known that elevated intra-ocular pressure (IOP) is the main risk factor for glaucoma, and many studies have shown that this is because glaucoma is related to a biomechanical imbalance in the eye [1]. Studies have also shown that the mechanics of the lamina cribrosa are heavily influenced by the mechanics of the surrounding peripapillary sclera [2]. The main load-bearing tissue in the peripapillary sclera is the collagen, which has a characteristic waviness called crimp shown in Figure 1. This collagen crimp is a large determinant of the mechanical properties of the tissue.

Microstructure of the Optic Nerve Head

INTRODUCTION The ocular disease glaucoma is the second most common source of blindness worldwide. Gradual, irreversible vision loss is a result of nerve damage in the optic nerve head; a collagen structure that provides support for the optic nerve and blood vessels that enter the posterior of the eye [1]. Glaucoma is clinically known to be correlated with high levels of intraocular pressure fro...

Microstructural Crimp of the Lamina Cribrosa and Peripapillary Sclera Collagen Fibers

Purpose Although collagen microstructural crimp is a major determinant of ocular biomechanics, no direct measurements of optic nerve head (ONH) crimp have been reported. Our goal was to characterize the crimp period of the lamina cribrosa (LC) and peripapillary sclera (PPS) at low and normal IOPs. Methods ONHs from 11 sheep eyes were fixed at 10-, 5-, or 0-mm Hg IOP and crimp periods measured...

Changes in posterior scleral collagen microstructure in canine eyes with an ADAMTS10 mutation.

PURPOSE We aimed to characterize alterations in the posterior scleral collagen microstructure before detectable disease onset in a canine model of open-angle glaucoma caused by an ADAMTS10 mutation. METHODS Collagen orientation, anisotropy degree (proportion of preferentially aligned collagen), and relative density were measured at 0.4 mm spatial resolution using synchrotron wide-angle X-ray ...

Peripapillary and posterior scleral mechanics--part I: development of an anisotropic hyperelastic constitutive model.

The sclera is the white outer shell and principal load-bearing tissue of the eye as it sustains the intraocular pressure. We have hypothesized that the mechanical properties of the posterior sclera play a significant role in and are altered by the development of glaucoma-an ocular disease manifested by structural damage to the optic nerve head. An anisotropic hyperelastic constitutive model is ...

Scleral structural alterations associated with chronic experimental intraocular pressure elevation in mice

PURPOSE To study changes in scleral structure induced by chronic experimental intraocular pressure elevation in mice. METHODS We studied the effect of chronic bead-induced glaucoma on scleral thickness, collagen lamellar structure, and collagen fibril diameter distribution in C57BL/6 (B6) and CD1 mice, and in collagen 8α2 mutant mice (Aca23) and their wild-type littermates (Aca23-WT) using el...
